Fresh flowers reward a little attention, and a few simple habits will keep each month’s bouquet looking its best for as long as possible. None of it is fussy — most of it takes a minute or two — but it can add days of life to your flowers. Here is what we recommend:
- Give each stem a fresh, angled cut of about 1cm before it goes in the vase, and re-trim every few days — a clean, slanted cut helps the flowers drink.
- Use clean, room-temperature water and refresh it every 2–3 days; tip out the old water, give the vase a quick rinse, and top it up.
- Keep the bouquet out of direct sun and away from heat sources, and away from ripening fruit — the ethylene that fruit gives off quietly ages flowers.
- Strip away any leaves that would sit below the waterline so they do not rot, and gently remove spent blooms as they fade to keep the rest looking fresh.
